There’s something timeless about Ballarat Golf Club. The rolling greens, the quiet mornings, the sense of history in every fairway. It’s Australia’s oldest continually operating golf club, and for nearly half a century, one humble Dean Trailer has been part of that story.
It’s not often you find a piece of equipment that outlasts the people who use it, but that’s exactly the case here. The Trailer, built by Dean Trailers sometime in the early 1970s, is still going strong today, still hauling, still working, still doing its bit to keep one of Australia’s most historic golf courses in top shape.

A Course with History and One Very Reliable Trailer
Ballarat Golf Club is known for its immaculate presentation and rich history. Established in 1895, it’s one of the cornerstones of the local community, hosting generations of golfers and visitors from across the country. Behind that polished presentation is a team of dedicated staff, like Jeff Powell, who has been with the club since 1985, maintaining the club’s high standards with reliable equipment.
Jeff recalls:
“I began working at the Ballarat Golf Club in 1985 as a groundsman. The Dean Trailer was already part of the equipment fleet when I arrived and it was considered old even then. Its exact origins are uncertain, but it’s believed the club purchased it second-hand.”
Even before Jeff’s time, the Trailer had already earned a reputation for being tough, reliable, and ready for anything. In the early days, it was towed by a grey Massey Ferguson tractor.
“The two were essentially a matched pair and remained that way until around 2009, when the old tractor was finally retired.”
The Trailer originally had steel sides, but mostly, it operated as a flatbed, which sometimes meant loads fell off during transport. Despite this, it earned a soft spot from the crew, who valued its toughness and reliability:

“The crew have a soft spot for the old Trailer. It’s known for its toughness and reliability. It’s been overloaded, tipped on its side many times, and still keeps going.
In the early days, before the club had work utility vehicles, the crew would often ride on the Trailer to reach work sites around the course. It’s fair to say the Trailer has become part of the club’s history and culture.”
The Workhorse of the Fairways
On any given morning, the maintenance team can be seen rumbling across the course, moving sand, soil, turf, and tools from hole to hole. It’s demanding work for any piece of machinery and yet this old Trailer just keet turning up. Over five decades, notable maintenance can be counted on just one hand:
- Replacement of a hydraulic seal in the telescopic ram
- Replacement of one tyre
- Replacement of the worn tow ring with a swivel hitch around 2010 to 2011
- Adjustment of the axle position, moving it forward approximately 600 mm to improve balance and reduce drawbar stress on newer Kubota tractors
- Replacement of the Trailer tray after rusting occurred. Some dents came courtesy of an excavator operator using the bucket to clear wet soil, though Jeff leaves the name undisclosed
Jeff sums it up:
“Over the past four decades, the Dean Trailer has been a true workhorse for the club. It’s been used for soil and sand transport, debris cleanup following storms, and general hauling duties, essentially anything that a Trailer can do around a golf course. Breakdowns have been remarkably rare in all that time.”
It’s more than just a tool now, it’s part of the club’s personality. Staff who come and go all seem to know the old Trailer; the same way they know the greens or the clubhouse verandah. Becoming a reminder that quality gear doesn’t need to be flashy, just functional.
When Something Works, You Stick with It
So, when the time came to add another Trailer to the fleet, the choice was obvious. After forty plus years of faithful service from their first, the Ballarat Golf Club went back to the name that had already proven itself, Dean Trailers.
Jeff explains:
“In recent years, we’ve found ourselves short on Trailer capacity during major earthworks projects. While we use Toro Workmans with hydraulic tippers, the Dean Trailer offers three times the load capacity and has proven extremely durable and well-suited to our needs. Its robust, simple design makes it a perfect fit for the course environment, practically unbreakable.”
The new Trailer, joins a long line of Dean-built equipment that has served Australian workers for generations. While it boasts a few modern refinements, stronger materials, updated design, and improved safety features, the philosophy behind it remains the same: build it right and build it to last.

Jeff adds:
“We will be keeping the old Trailer and it will still be used…a coat of paint and she’ll be right to continue its legacy at the Ballarat Golf Club. For another 40+ years.”
For Dean Trailers, hearing that a customer is still using one of our builds from half a century ago is the ultimate compliment. Every Trailer that leaves the factory is designed with longevity in mind, and Ballarat Golf Club’s story is a perfect example of that philosophy in action.
A Story That Keeps Rolling
In a world where so much is built to be replaced, there’s something refreshing about a story like this, a reminder that true value isn’t found in the latest technology or the newest paint job, but in the quiet consistency of something that just works; year after year and decade after decade.
The old Dean Trailer at Ballarat Golf Club might not turn heads, but it’s earned its place in the club’s history. And now, as its modern counterpart joins the team, there’s a satisfying sense of continuity, carrying on the same tradition of care and craftsmanship.
From the early mornings to the long afternoons, from the old greens to the new, Ballarat Golf Club has seen more than its fair share of change. But through it all, that Dean Trailer has rolled steadily on, a simple, sturdy reminder that when something’s built right, it stands the test of time.
And with a new AG30 (formally known as the Mark II) Trailer now ready to take up the load, it looks like that legacy will keep rolling for decades to come.
